Some student photos taken OF me
Posted on July 8th, 2009 by Will.
Turning the tables – me, the subject, instead of me, the taker. And Yes, there are more pounds on my frame. I’ve entered a certain decade in years, married, have a son, and love my pasta & bread.

Our own Robin Hood
Posted on March 20th, 2009 by Will.
I most often describe Willamette Academy as a college access program for talented, intelligent and creative students from low-income backgrounds & less formally educated families. Well, Phillip, who I’ve mentioned before, definitely tends to privilege the creative in his life. After borrowing some string, he came back into our space to show off his newly handmade bow & arrow. My life would be a little less interesting without Phillip in it.

Just messin’ around

Some of the kids hangin’ out in my office. A nice break from some of my more mundane tasks. They’re quite use to the fact that I have my camera around most of the time.

Another from the outtakes series – Jordan, Rocio and Jose. Well you’ll have to take my word that’s Jose.

Ok. This is part of my outtakes series, but Phillip is a special case. (OOHHH in so many ways!
)
You couldn’t know this, but in many ways this really isn’t an outtake. To get Phillip to give me a traditional portrait pose, now that would be an outtake. As I’ve mentioned previously, these photo sessions are necessary for our organization, but an enjoyable necessity for sure. I like to think the traditional style portraits reflect at least a bit of the immense personalities, substance and possibility of each of these students. But the outtakes… well judge for yourself.

Still enjoying photographing my students very much. The style needs to be fairly traditional, but my students for the most part have never had a chance to get photos done in this way (honestly, I’m not trying to inflate my abilities). They’re very happy with the results.
For me I quite enjoy the in-between moments. I hope to post a few more soon.

It’s incredible how much the students physically mature after just one year in the program. They enter our program in the summer before their eighth grade academic year. I’m really enjoying doing these portraits.

My students plus 1

It’s difficult at times to shoot for traditional purposes, and to have the students like the photos. This set contains 29 students (of 112) and Joshua. It’s been very rewarding to do this shoot. Normally, we’re working together on other projects. (click on the photo for a larger view)
